Jim of NB Starcross says he is thrilled that he's finally broken through to 99 on the Top 100 Boating Sites list - elbowing his way past Mr David in the process. He says:
Heading the bloggers on the list is Sue of "No Problem" on 27, but recent stars, "Lucky Duck", whose adventures we are all following with bated breath don't appear to be playing this game and neither is Chief Blogger Andrew on Granny Buttons.
'Chief Blogger?' Oh dear, I don't think I can cope with that. That's one reason why I left the 'Top 100' a year or so back. I suffer from vertigo, it's like walking a tightrope.
I discovered Top 100 Boating Sites fairly early on, and was initially gratified to be ranked pretty highly, always below Jim Shead but sometimes in the mid- teens. I think my record was 11 or 12 one week. But there were many fewer bloggers then, and it had an American focus - still does.
I quit Top 100 Boating Sites last year because I couldn't stand the heat. On the tightrope I looked below me, and others were catching up, especially Sue of No Problem.
Also, because it was international with a US focus, and not 'ethnically British' enough. Too many sailboats and Texas marinas, party boats, bass fishing, white teeth and perfect figures in bikinis. Don't get me wrong, I loved being with them, but I felt more kinship to Top 100 Pubs.
Of canal boats, Jim Shead and Martin Thingy of Pennine Waterways are now the leaders here, and I guess they deserve to be.
But what's really needed is an exclusively UK Waterways Roll, one we can all post on our websites as a badge, that reflects only the ranking of Brit canal blogs. Then we can all play the game.
I've asked an experienced Wordpress programmer if he can come up with a solution.
Or perhaps you can?
Oh, all right, I might just go back on the Top 100 Boating Sites for a week or two, out of curiosity. But I'm going to regret it, I know it.
I go neither boating nor blogging in a spirit of competition: all you are doing is increasing the stress in your life as Jim's comment shows.
If even one person finds my blog helpful or amusing or it helps them along this rocky road in some other way, that's enough for me.
Cheers
Bruce
