Model narrowboat maker John Rawson has got an additional website for his Bespoke Model Boats.
It seems to be a change of direction. For some time he's build model narrowboats. But he says:
I am adding another string to my bow with an additional website for other boats that I replicate ... The website is not complete yet. It's all about time for me to build it and models as well.
I wrote about John's boats a couple of years ago (see Granny Buttons: Bespoke model boats, August 2007, and his original website).
His working narrowboat models are amazing, but they are unpriced on the website. I suspect that if you have to ask, you probably can't afford them. Such intricacy can't come cheap.
So it surely makes sense for him to seek bigger markets. And the boats he's now showing on the new website do seem to be bigger.
The 'Grand Banks ocean cruiser' on the home page of his new website reminds me of the fishing boat of Quint, the shark hunter, in Jaws.
There's that famous scene in Jaws where Roy Scheider, playing Chief Brody, comes face-to-face for the first time with the shark.
Chief Brody jumps back wide-eyed and mutters to Quint: "You're gonna need a bigger boat".
Wonderful as his model narrowboats are, maybe John (pictured here, on his own boat) has decided that that's what's needed in the model boat market. Bigger boats.
