My post about Terry Darlington's rush to get a new boat - Narrow Dog - a twice-written scroll - quickly got just a single star from someone.
The five-star grading system is now common across the web, particularly in sound and video, such as on iTunes and YouTube. (The system I use is Outbrain, and it's easy to add it to your blog).
Different systems have different names but the same meanings. Below are the Outbrain / YouTube definitions:
* Bad / Poor
** Boring / Nothing special
*** OK / Worth watching
**** Good / Pretty cool
***** Excellent / Excellent!
The drawback of this system is it's one-dimensional. It can't show the difference between where you think it's pretentious and dull, and where you simply are offended by it no matter how well written it is.
Still, at least it gives a clue.
One or two other posts of mine have picked up single stars. That's great! I'd like a few more one-stars, please, and many more two- and three-stars. It really gives me a clue as to what doesn't work. What's more, it brings a whole new meaning to the phrase "YOU'RE A STAR!"
Oh, and please don't mark something as 5-star just to flatter, or because you simply endorse my point of view. It's rarely that good.
For example, my post from 5 years ago - Book covers restoration of the 'Ponty' - though not renaming, unfortunately - was recently given a single star.
This might have been because it was badly written and the photograph was dull, maybe it was pretentious, or perhaps it was just a Welsh culture lover's reaction to this sentence:
The Ponty [Pontcysyllte Aqueduct] counts as one of the Seven Wonders of the Waterways, but with its outré Celtic spelling it also ranks in my book as one of The Great Wonders of Dyslexia.
For fun, perhaps we could include a series of rupertbearish rhyming couplets reflecting a range of negative opinions, such as:
Your photo's nice, your writing soared,
But your argument is deeply flawed.
and:
This really is beyond the pale
A reject from the Daily Mail.

Andrew, you know you are A STAR!

Hey, it was a mistake! I accidentally hit the 'publish now' button, and you must have been stalking me to have picked it up before I tried to remove it 2 mins later. It was due to be tomorrow's lunchtime post.
Oh well, you'll just have to go hungry tomorrow.
Kev 'n' Halfie spotted me,
Just ONE star for Granny B!

Well starred - er, spotted - Kevin. Granny's often ahead of the game.
