The headline (below) in BBC Stoke's story today - about rubberneckers trying to see the canal breach site at Leek - didn't alliterate as well as it could have.
(I've tried harder in the headline for this post.)
Curious climb canal safety fence - BBC Stoke & Staffordshire
Hundreds of people are reported to have crossed safety barriers to look at a breach in a canal in Staffordshire.
British Waterways said a pub landlord had reported customers scaling security fencing to see a 15m (50ft) hole in Caldon Canal
But what surprises me is how the 'pub landlord' could even see people climbing over the fence. According to Google Maps, the two nearest pubs are over half a mile away. Was he using binoculars?
If so, there's surely scope (sorry) for an enterprising innkeeper to install and advertise a telescope to draw in the drinkers.

If there is an injury what about, Curious Compatriot Comes a Cropper Climbing Caldon Canal Cordon. Beat that!!!

I have been there. You don't have to climb over anything. You can simply walk around the barrier BW has put up across the towpath.
The site of the breach is no more dangerous than a thousand other places out in the countryside but I appreciate BW are protecting themselves against litigation.
The breach looks like half a days work with a JCB to sort out. It's frightening that they are talking about half a million pounds
