Can a boat go on a diet? Can she just squee-eeze through?
No. She's too FAT.
But what the Froghall Tunnel profile doesn't say is what the draught is; i.e. how deep the canal is at this point. That's the one weakness of Canalplan.
Granny's actually very slim, very shallow, under the water. Only 1'10" or so.
When I have my dream boat built, it'll have lots of water tanks throughout the length. The idea is to adjust the trim of the boat, and its draught, and raise or lower it in the water. According to needs.
Also, the cant rail (the raised bit on the side that you let go of when you fall in) will be painted in raddle red, not gloss paint, so when it gets rubbed by tunnel brick I will simply sand it down and slosh more paint over.
Granny didn't get through to Froghall Wharf. No surprise, I didn't even try.

But Melvin, I've got no FRIENDS!

Fill Granny with people.

I'll make the standard response here to suggestions about things CanalPlan should feature (as distinct from things it should do) - give me the data and I'll see what I can do. What I will do is stick new columns for air and water draught in the super-duper new SQL based version that is growing on my hard disk. Hacking code - fun. Going round the waterways with a measuring stick - less fun (well, the going round the waterways bit is nice, but life keeps getting in the way).
I could, of course, take draughts from here: http://www.waterscape.com/canals-and-rivers/grand-union-canal/boating/dimensions (he says with his tongue so firmly in his cheek that he looks like a hamster).

Andrew,
I'm curious. Did you go through the tunnel, or did you have to back up and turn around?
Best wishes,
Mark

Three years ago we squeezed through having topped up the water tank and filled the hip bath. We "handed" our way through with very few millimetres to spare. On the way back it was much easier as we'd picked up three extra passengers. The story is told here.
