The Waterways Trust's Saturday job
The Waterways Trust has appointed Judy Niner as a trustee.
I've never quite understood what The Waterways Trust does, except that it seems to stand midstream between British Waterways and the Inland Waterways Association. In its own words:
The Waterways Trust works to fulfil the economic, social and environmental potential of the UK's inland waterway network.
By encouraging people to get involved in our activities, we aim to heighten awareness and enjoyment of the waterways while bringing real and sustainable benefit to local communities in all their diversity.
Here are The Waterways Trust's Aims & Objectives.
Everyone is delighted:
Frances Done, Chairman of The Waterways Trust, said: “I am delighted to welcome Judy to the board of Trustees... ”
Judy Niner, newly appointed Trustee, said: “I am delighted to become a Trustee of The Waterways Trust....”
(I wish PR people wouldn't say 'delighted'. Delight is something that takes you by surprise, after the event. If the Chairman was delighted, she can't have realised she was about to get a new trustee. If the new trustee was delighted, she must have had very unexpected and generous emolument terms.)
However, the trusteeship is not a full-time post for Judy Niner; more of a Saturday job. I'm most interested in a clever little internet venture she has called 'mondaytofriday.com'.
The basic idea is that if you live away from home Monday-Friday because of work commitments, you can rent out your home for that time. You get a part-time lodger and rent, and your house back at the weekend; the lodger get a modestly priced weekday home.
www.mondaytofriday.com charges about £10/month, and it acts, effectively, as a dating agency for landladies/lodgers.
I think this has great capabilities for canal boaters. There must be many people who have boats they only want to use at the weekend, and who would be willing to rent their boats out during the week. Or perhaps longer - say, during a long summer holiday.
There's no trial subscription option, so I can't find out if boaters could use www.mondayt0friday.com
But you could always try Apollo Duck for free. They have boats for rent here, although nothing quite like www.mondayt0friday.com. Not yet, anyway.
