Ex-rugby star triumphs after second try at flat conversion - The Scotsman
Norrie Rowan's plans to convert an old shoe warehouse and garage into a modern apartment were thwarted by planners who claimed it would look "alien".
But former international prop Mr Rowan appealed to the Scottish Executive and has now had the green light for the canalside development at Watson Crescent, Polwarth.
Mr Rowan said today: "I felt the decision of the committee was extremely short-sighted and this has been a complete waste of time for everyone.
"I was trying to create a great piece of architecture in this area to replace an old warehouse and there was no good reason to turn it down. I'm furious about this."
(There's a nice picture of the Union canal at Watson Crescent, Polwarth, here. The ex-rugby star in question seems to own a fair bit of property around here. A sex offender who was renting one of his flats near here came to a gruesome end nearby a couple of years back, according to this story in the Herald. I'm sure his tenants will be safer and happier, knowing they now won't have to live in a grotty old canalside shoe warehouse.)
Similar clashed continue up and down the waterways. This week Lindy Foster-Weinreb sent out another plea to 'save Berkhamsted Wharf' as the developer thwarted earlier this year returned to attempt another try.
