Canal basin plan gets boost - Oxford Mail
Hopes of recreating the Oxford Canal basin as the centrepiece of the city's regenerated West End have received a major boost from British Waterways. A report by a senior British Waterways engineer found that it is technically feasible to reinstate the long-gone canal basin, now the site of the Worcester Street car park. It sets out three options, showing how the city could have a major new attraction for between £3.8m and £5.3m.
Boatyard fight 'not over yet' - Oxford Mail (see my previous buttons).
The Castle Mill yard in Canal Street, Jericho, has been occupied by protesters since August, but on Friday owner British Waterways was given permission at Oxford County Court to evict them. As a gesture of goodwill, the illegal residents will be allowed to stay for Christmas, and a deadline of February 28 has been set for the eviction. British Waterways wants to redevelop the site with housing.
Hmm, this story ought to be headlined 'BW win eviction case', but it's been cleverly spun (by whom?) into a 'fight's not over' story after BW allowed a delay of execution. Bad PR to evict before Christmas, of course, and all parties want a chance to shop at the January sales.
